People in Edwardian times were not as sensitive as most of the folk today, because we can sometimes be shocked and hurt by subjects the public in the past considered suitable to make into a joke. Minority groups were shamelessly, cruelly mimicked.

Some unfortunates were sent postcards in the form of membership documentation to the ‘Liars Council of the Ancient, Reckless and Independent Order of Prevaricators,’ for instance.

What is deeply offensive to us in our twenty-first-century world never caused a stir in the early days of the postcard. A famous actress today would not dream of being on display to her public clutching the type of doll in this card depicting Ethel Oliver.
